What is the Golden Era of Porn?

Between 1969 and 1984 adult films were actually received with positive attention from mainstream film creators. Some of the more well-known directors and performers from the ’60s through the ’90s were Gerard Damiano, Linda Lovelace, Harry Reems, Ron Jeremy, Nina Harley, Micky Lynn, Traci Lords, Annie Sprinkle, Eric Edwards, Herschel Savage, Peter North, Ginger Lynn, Vanessa del Rio, John Holmes, and many others.

Pornographic films during this time actually had a plot and a story line. The adult industry’s Golden Age Era was where VHS took pornography into a multi-million dollar business.

It began with the release of the 1969 film Blue Movie directed by Andy Warhol, one of the first adult erotic films depicting explicit sex which was released in theaters throughout the United States

Another classic, Deep Throat, directed by Damiano changed how pornographic films were accepted. Pornographic films were beginning to actually gain screen time in public theaters and mainstream Hollywood directors started to use some of what was being portrayed in adult films in their own mainstream films.

Other pornographic films now known as classics from this era were Behind the Green Door (1972) starring Marilyn Chambers, The Devil in Miss Jones (1973), The Opening of Misty Beethoven (1976) and Debbie Does Dallas (1978).

The New York Times titled this time as porno chic, where pornography became fashionable and gained mainstream publicity and popularity

The hot spots, for pornographic film making, was New York and Los Angeles. Now known as Time Square, this is where all the theater showed nude girls and low-budget horror films. Then there was 43rd Street known as Soubrette Row, where most of the brownstones on the block functioned as brothels.

However, New York film-making days began to slow when mayor Kock and Giuliani decided to close up many of the cities porn theaters and make New York City more tourist-friendly. Well-known streets like 42nd were cleaned up and porn theaters were removed.

My interview with Eric Edwards takes you, our listeners down memory lane of the Golden Era of Porn.
